Jason Z. Brainer

Assistant General Counsel – Client Accounts

Jason Brainer is Assistant General Counsel in the firm’s Troy office, focusing his practice on creditor rights, security clearance, corporate and nonprofit law. He has experience with both private and public sector law, as well as international business development, risk, compliance, contract negotiation, and government relations.

Prior to joining Dickinson Wright, Jason spent years as a litigator, representing major banks in complex litigation and disputes. He has also served as a criminal defense and bankruptcy attorney, an international business development specialist and is a former U.S. diplomat.

Jason is bilingual, practicing law and conducting business in both English and Spanish.

  • Represented major U.S. banks during all stages of civil litigation regarding contractual disputes and consumer law matters.
  • Defended and litigated actions brought against clients under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
  • Engaged in private arbitration to settle and/or obtain significant favorable awards for major U.S. banks.
  • Specialized in federal security clearance matters.
  • Advised for-profit corporations and 501(c)(3) charities on corporate law matters, including corporate structure, formation, Board selection, and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Represented and expanded the business interests of a top 10 U.S. Food and Beverage Manufacturing firm throughout Latin America.
  • Served as a U.S. Diplomat at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan and handled internal political, economic and counter terrorism issues.
  • Developed new political initiatives focused on improving relations between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
  • Collaborated with U.S. Embassies in Southeast Asia to lobby foreign governments to support and enforce U.S. sanctions against the DPRK.
  • Prepared the U.S. Secretary of State and his team for overseas summits between DPRK Leader Kim Cho’ng Un and the President of the United States.
  • Served as Information Technology Manager at U.S. Department of State and identified cyber threats to United States Government (USG) interests unilaterally and through cooperating with other USG agencies and foreign governments.
