Emily’s professional training as a Certified Fraud Examiner and Certified Public Accountant in Michigan enables her to bring acute investigative and analytical skills to her work as a commercial litigator and member of internal investigations and financial regulatory defense teams. Emily’s client-first strategic mindset incorporates her experience in fraud detection and investigation, financial statement analysis, complex data analysis, financial modeling, quantification of economic damages in commercial disputes, and lost profit calculations. Her litigation and investigations experience spans publicly held and private companies, and individuals, in the automotive, healthcare, construction and accounting industries.

Emily’s complex litigation experience includes serving as lead counsel for a national print and internet advertiser in actions involving the enforcement of contracts and defending against contract and business tort claims. She has counseled and represented clients on the application of the Uniform Commercial Code and contract law. Emily has particular experience in the areas of contract disputes, business torts, employment issues, and non-competition agreements. In the federal and state tax areas, Emily has experience in tax appeals, audits, controversies, and litigation. She has represented individuals, small businesses, and major corporations in tax and general business matters. Emily’s successes in IRS disputes includes successfully negotiating a no tax-liability determination.

With her CFE and CPA background, Emily is a key member on the firm’s teams conducting internal investigations and defending government and regulatory investigations involving allegations of financial crimes and accounting improprieties. Emily has been responsible for factual and financial data and document analysis, and provided critical input into complex matters framing arguments to government agencies. She has served as counsel in cases in which the firm has obtained favorable results for individuals, including auditors and attorneys, and for corporations and their officers, directors and other senior officials in federal and state securities, financial crimes, public corruption, and other government investigations. Emily served as counsel for public and non-public companies conducting internal investigations, and represents officers, directors and employees in internal investigations. She also has assisted in defending parties in white collar criminal investigations by federal and state authorities, and investigations by securities regulators. With her many years of experience as a CPA and CFE, Emily is uniquely situated to help clients anticipate and respond to both internal and external investigations related to accounting and fraud.

Prior to attending law school at Michigan State College of Law. She also worked as a Litigation Consultant at a Detroit-based CPA firm..

  • Secured a penalty abatement from the IRS in the amount of approximately $300,000, based upon a “reasonable cause” exemption for late payment.
  • Negotiated with the IRS to accept amended returns that secured a total refund of over $234,000, and secured a penalty abatement from the IRS in the amount of approximately $100,000, based upon a “reasonable cause” exemption, which released all federal tax liens.

  • Secured “No Change” federal audit determinations for clients utilizing micro-captive insurance (a hot-issue tax deduction for the IRS).
