The Canada-US border was closed to non-essential travel for thirty days on March 21, 2020. These restrictions have been serially renewed, most recently through August 21, 2020. This has resulted in a great deal of hardship among cross-border families, people with property interest in both countries, important (albeit non-essential) business travelers, and the retail and tourism sectors which rely on cross-border business.
Despite having been in place for almost five months, there has been little public progress towards describing what a border-opening decision would require.
This presentation will identify critical issues affected by the current situation, and review available procedures, which might be useful in allowing safe and efficient crossings in the foreseeable future.
